The Good News
The term gospel literally means “good news.” In Christian belief, it refers to the message that Jesus Christ came into the world to make forgiveness available to everyone who places their trust in Him (Colossians 1:14; Romans 10:9). From the moment humanity fell into sin through the first man, all people have lived under God’s judgment (Romans 5:12). Because every person violates God’s moral standard, no one is without guilt (Romans 3:23). Sin results in death—first physical death, and ultimately eternal separation from God (Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15; Matthew 25:46). Scripture describes this eternal separation as the “second death” (Revelation 20:14–15).
This grim reality is met by the hope found in the gospel. Out of love for humanity, God created a way for sins to be forgiven (John 3:16). He sent Jesus Christ, His Son, who willingly bore the sins of the world and suffered death on the cross in humanity’s place (1 Peter 2:24). Because sin was laid upon Christ, forgiveness is granted to all who believe in Him (Acts 10:43). His resurrection confirms that those who trust in Him are declared righteous before God (Romans 4:25).
Scripture clearly outlines the core of the gospel message. The apostle Paul explains that the gospel he preached—and by which believers are saved—centers on what matters most: Jesus died for sins in fulfillment of Scripture, was buried, rose from the dead on the third day, and appeared to many witnesses, including the apostles and hundreds of others (1 Corinthians 15:1–6). Paul highlights that this message is of supreme importance. Christ’s burial confirms His death, and the eyewitness accounts confirm His resurrection.
At its heart, the gospel proclaims that God has provided the only way for people to escape the penalty of sin (John 14:6; Romans 6:23). While physical death comes to everyone, those who believe in Jesus are promised resurrection and eternal life with Him (John 11:23–26). Those who reject Him face not only physical death but eternal judgment, described in Scripture as the lake of fire (Revelation 20:13–14). Salvation is found in no one else but Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).
The gospel of Jesus Christ is the greatest news anyone can receive. How a person responds to it determines their eternal destiny. God offers life and calls all people to respond in faith—calling upon the Lord and receiving salvation (Romans 10:13).
